Ordering Digital Internet#
Ordering new Digital Internet service is easy. Start by selecting Create Internet Service from the Dashboard or Service Builder in the navigation menu on the left.

This starts the Digital Internet wizard flow. Here you will enter the relevant service details such as A-Side selection, network configuration, and routing.

Step 1 – Name, Description, And Purchase Order Number#
Enter a name for your new service. As with all ServiceFabric services, this must be unique. Then enter an optional description of your new service.

Step 2 - Location of service#
Select a location for your new service. In most cases this will be a full-featured site offering Digital Internet from Digital Realty. In some instances, service may be sourced by a partner and may not have features such as additional IPs or BGP routing.

Basic versus Full Feature#
Basic Internet is a single IP Internet offering without advanced features such as BGP or multiple IP blocks. It's a great choice for out of band management or small bandwidth needs.
Full Feature gives you access to all the routing and IP options possible with Digital Internet, such a private and public BGP plus support for customer owned IP blocks.
Step 3 - Choose A-Side End Point#
You must select the customer side endpoint for your service. This can be a port, port group, or a virtual router.
- If you select a port or port-group, you can set the A-Side VLAN details.
- If you select a virtual router, you can set a compatible MTU as well.

Step 4 - Select a Service Type And Speed#
Your service type determines your billing arrangement. You must select a CDR (Committed Data Rate) for your service and determine if you need your bill to remain fixed at that speed or can it burst above that level periodically.
Bursting gives you access to additional bandwidth for your service when you need it, but you only pay extra if your total consumption is more than 5% over your CDR.

Step 5 - Add WAN IPs#
Add a WAN IP block for your service. Up to 10 blocks can be rented. The cost is per IP address. There must be at least one block of IPs assigned to the WAN port.

Step 6 - Choose Routing Options#
Select a routing type for your network. These settings are based on your networking needs. We offer support for Public and Private BGP as well as a routed block of LAN IPs.

Routed LAN#
Digital Realty can lease up to 10 additional IP blocks to the customer. Simply click Add IP Block and choose the size you need from the dropdown. To remove a block, click the red trashcan.

Private BGP#
Configure private BGP between your network and Digital Realty’s Internet infrastructure. Add IP blocks (up to 10) and an optional BGP password.

Public BGP#
Configure Public BGP between your network and Digital Realty’s Internet infrastructure. Select your customer-owned IP blocks and choose a routing type from the dropdown menu.

NOTE: Approval is required for all customer-owned IP blocks. Please reach out to your account team to request approval for your customer-owned IPs. Provide the IP ranges you wish to bring as well as proof of ownership. Your request will be reviewed and if approved, the customer IP blocks will be added to your account > for selection.
The routing type dropdown has three options:
- Default Routes
- Default + Full Routing Table
- Full Routing Table

Summary#
View your final configuration and pricing. If you are satisfied with your configuration, continue to the SUBMIT step below. At this stage you have the option to add a promo code if one has been shared with you by the account team.

Inventory#
Your new Internet service can be found in your Inventory under the Internet tab. Each service is connected to your A-Side via a virtual cross connect. You can find this virtual cross connect under the tab for Links or Connections tab.

Editing Your Digital Internet#
To edit your Internet service, visit Inventory and the Internet tab. Click the pencil icon for your service.

NOTE: Editing the speed of your Internet Link is allowed, but may result in a lower service if the speeds do not match.
Adding or Removing Links to Digital Internet#
It's possible to remove the Link attached to your Digital Internet and add another. If you remove the Link to your Internet, you can create another and reattach it.
Visit Inventory and click the Link tab. Choose Create Link and proceed. Choose your A-Side port and on the right select Digital Internet as the attachment type. The dropdown will populate with your existing Digital Internet services. Select the required Internet service and choose your new speed.
Click NEXT to proceed.

95th Percentile Billing#
Digital Realty Trust’s Digital Internet service is billed using an industry standard 95th percentile (“95th P”) billing method. Bandwidth is measured (or sampled) from the Digital Realty routers and recorded in a log file every five minutes (approximately 8000 measurements per month). At the end of the month, the input samples are sorted from highest to lowest and the top 5% (approximately 36 hours of a 30-day billing cycle) of data are discarded. All values are rounded to the next highest number. For example, if the 95th percentile value is 11.3 Mbps the value considered is 12Mbps. The same is then done with the output samples.
To arrive at the billable utilization for the month, Digital Realty selects the higher usage measurement of either the input or output traffic flows and calculates billing based on that usage measurement. Based on this model, the top 36 hours (top 5% of 720 hours) of peak traffic is not considered when billed for an entire month. Bandwidth could be utilized at a higher rate for up to 65 min a day with no financial impact to the monthly contracted commit. All overage is billed at the same per mg rate your CDR is billed.
For example, the 95th P for the month is 6Mbps. For service with a 10Mbps CIR there would be no overages charges for the month. However, if the CDR were 5Mpbs then there would be a 1 Mbps overage for the month shown.
6Mpbs (95th P) – 5Mbps (CIR) = 1Mbps (Overage)
The overage charge would then be calculated as:
1Mbps (Overage) x Per Mg Rate = Monthly Overage Charge
Overage charges are billed in arrears on a separate monthly invoice noting the specific overage and dollar amount owed. For questions concerning the 95th P billing method or for billing inquiries in general, please do not hesitate to contact your Client Service Manager.
